Is your college degree really just a piece of paper?

A dangerous perspective to have!

An alternate perspective

"Industry needs industry ready graduates" — Dipesh Bafna

True that some drop outs do make a good fortune. But many a times, they discover their entrepreneurial calling while exploring one of the subjects, while pursuing the formal education itself. Even if one looks at formal education, just as an avenue where one gets to explore and find their interest, still it has definitely served some purpose of giving a wanderer some direction!

Today many successful entrepreneurs draw a parallel between a paper and the degree. Are we not considering the impact it might have on the otherwise clueless students, who were looking to pursue degree with utmost sincerity? Not all aim to be trend setter, or are comfortable taking risks in their career. Many do aim, with pride, a structured professional path such as a CA, doctor, consultants etc. One may argue here that the intentions behind making such statements are only to fill some hope among those who do not succeed at earning a degree. Some might as well say that such statements do not necessarily demean education as a whole, but some might mistake it to be.

Would it not be more appropriate to say, "college degree is infact much more than just a piece of paper, so make sure you are learning the theory and also the field application part of it along."

Theoretical knowledge is not a problem in itself, missing out on the practical know hows part of it is. How else would be have all the much needed professionals around us, based on whose expertise we all rely!

Practical know hows, practical application are important, but a formal structured learning pattern in a degree is always a good have to know "what to apply", in the first place!
